Thietmar von Merseburg first reported an urbs Libzi in 1015. The name Leipzig can be translated as city of lime trees from the Sorbian lipa - lime tree. In 1871 Leipzig became a big city with 100,000 inhabitants. The German Football Association was formed in Leipzig in 1900. VfB Leipzig was the first German football champion in 1903.
