The name Leipzig can be translated as city of lime trees from the Sorbian lipa - lime tree. The city was first mentioned in 1015 when Thietmar von Merseburg reported an urbs Libzi. With the founding of the city, the two large church buildings emerged - the Thomaskirche and the St. Nikolaikirche. After the administrative reform in 1499, Leipzig was part of the Leipzig district, which included seven others in the electorate.
