Leipzig (city of lime trees; Sorbian lipa - lime tree) was first mentioned in 1015 when Thietmar von Merseburg reported an urbs Libzi. Leipzig was in the Margraviate of Meissen, which became part of the Electorate of Saxony in 1439. The University of Leipzig was founded on December 2nd, 1409 as -Alma Mater Lipsiensis- and is one of the three oldest universities in Germany. In 1871 Leipzig became a big city with 100,000 inhabitants. In 1989, the Monday demonstrations that started at the Nikolaikirche helped herald the end of the GDR.
