The name Leipzig can be translated as city of lime trees from the Sorbian lipa - lime tree. The city was first mentioned in 1015 when Thietmar von Merseburg reported an urbs Libzi. After being elevated to the status of imperial trade fair city in 1497 and extension of the staple right to a radius of 115 kilometers ten years later by the future Emperor Maximilian I, Leipzig became a trade fair city of European standing.
