After being elevated to the status of imperial trade fair city in 1497 and extension of the staple right to a radius of 115 kilometers ten years later by the future Emperor Maximilian I, Leipzig became a trade fair city of European standing. In 1650, the incoming newspapers appeared six times a week for the first time. This makes it the oldest daily newspaper in the world. On September 17, 1631, the Battle of Breitenfeld in the Leipzig area was the scene of one of the greatest defeats of the Imperials under Tilly in the Thirty Years' War. After the administrative reform in 1499, Leipzig was part of the Leipzig district, which included seven others in the electorate. Leipzig was affected by the Schmalkaldic War of 1546 and 1547, in which Leipzig and Saxony were primarily concerned with equal rights for the Protestant denomination.
