The name Leipzig can be translated as city of lime trees from the Sorbian lipa - lime tree. The city was first mentioned in 1015 when Thietmar von Merseburg reported an urbs Libzi. During the Seven Years' War, Leipzig was occupied by Prussia from 1756 to 1763. The city was founded in 1165, when Margrave Otto the Rich of Meissen granted city rights and market rights to the town at the intersection of the Via Regia and the Via Imperii.
