Between 1631 and 1642 the city was besieged five times, from 1642 to 1650 it was occupied by the Swedes. Alongside London, the Leipziger Brühl became the international trade center for the fur industry, and the important role played by the Leipzig Jewish community was closely linked to it. In 1519, Martin Luther, Andreas Karlstadt and Philipp Melanchthon met the Catholic theologian Johannes Eck at the invitation of the university in the Pleissenburg for a debate that went down in history as the Leipzig Disputation. With the founding of the city, the two large church buildings emerged - the Thomaskirche and the St. Nikolaikirche. Leipzig gradually developed into the most important transport hub in Central Germany, which was also reflected in the fact that Leipzig Central Station was built from 1902 to 1915 as one of the largest terminal stations in Europe at the time.
