The name Leipzig can be translated as city of lime trees from the Sorbian lipa - lime tree. The city was first mentioned in 1015 when Thietmar von Merseburg reported an urbs Libzi. The first issue of the Illustrirte Zeitung was published in the same year. In 1989, the Monday demonstrations that started at the Nikolaikirche helped herald the end of the GDR.
